Fayol on the functions and principles of management
The first written list of what a manager actually does — and it is still repeated as if it were a law.
Coordination fell off the textbook list, and it is exactly the one clubs lack most. Fayol wrote down five acts — forecasting, organising, commanding, coordinating, controlling — and was the first to say administration can be learned.
- The situation
In one week a volunteer takes instructions from both the president and the events lead, and they differ.
- What the model says
This breaks unity of command: the person does not work twice as hard — they start choosing which one to obey, and both superiors assume the job is done.
- What you do
Against every task write the one name that person takes instructions from, and tell both leads.
