Weber on legitimate authority and bureaucracy

The point, in one line

Rules and offices outlive even the most compelling founder. Weber thought that was both progress and a cage.

How it works

Weber splits the question 'why does anyone obey?' into three answers, and only the third one survives the person leaving.

Traditional authority'we have always done it this way'
Charismatic authoritypeople believe in one person; it leaves when they leave
Legal-rational authoritythe office is obeyed, and only within the limits a rule sets
Look at which of the three your club runs on. If the answer is the second, your authority is still sitting inside you, and in June it walks out with you.
The same thing, in your club
  1. The situation

One person has carried the club for three years; he graduates in June, and nobody on the board knows how the bank, the mail and the social accounts are handled.

  2. What the model says

Charismatic authority cannot be inherited: the club will collapse not because everyone else is lazy but because authority was never moved out of the person and into the office.

  3. What you do

This week write one description of the office — what that person does, what they hold, and who replaces them — and put it into the club's documents.

What it claims
